Chloe Grace Hartwell.
To some, she might be one of the most promising talents to have ever stepped foot inside of the ring for women’s professional wrestling – of course, before the likes of Hayley Webb or Neo Starwind would’ve ever graced the spotlights the way that they have – and when it came down to the wrestling scene inside of the United Kingdom? She had the crown, she held her namesake to be a bright star in the making, a future prodigal icon that was bound to set the books on fire when her name would’ve been written into the pages. That was her dream, after all, to be one of the most successful stars to have ever stepped through the ropes, to be a pioneer and to be a role model for most other young women who would also try to accomplish the same dreams that Chloe had.
This star, however, never seemed to have shined the same way that she would’ve wanted to. With every hill that she seemed to have climbed, there was always a decline that awaited her. No matter what, she always found herself to have been on the other side of success whenever she followed it. For the past couple of years bouncing between the United Kingdom, Ireland, and even back at her true home in Australia– she’ll always find a footing, but yet, always finds a way to slip up and allow herself to start from the beginning. Thus, it began her spiral down out of the wrestling scene, feeling that she simply failed her mentor at the time – legend of the sport, Jason Long – and she seemed ready to hang up the boots and find another way to succeed.
But, what came for her during a tryout for a promotion called Anonymous Xtreme Wrestling back in January of 2019 was the true fall of Chloe Hartwell, the night that she found out of her torn ligaments within both of her knees, causing them to weaken overtime—and with just how long they have gone untreated? They’ve grown to be uncontrollably weak. It would’ve taken Chloe an excessive amount of time before her knees would’ve come back to the usual way that they were beforehand. The touchup of surgery was needed, and in that moment of realisation that her career has been destroyed by this out-of-nowhere injury, it was the moment that Chloe Hartwell dreaded for so long to let happen to her.
Her career, as a professional wrestler, was done and she couldn’t do anything about it.
A few months have passed and Chloe Hartwell was on the slow road to recovery, with doctors expecting a fully recovered Hartwell to be ready to head back inside of the ring within the new year, but even with that bit of great news inside of her mind? She doesn’t know whether to return to the ring or not. She wasn’t aware of what might’ve been a good idea or even a bad idea, all that she knew was things would never be the same again. Chloe had brought herself back to the heart of Dublin City, finding herself back to where she began her professional wrestling career in the Immortality School of Wrestling, as she walked through the warehouse building and saw how empty the place was on this Sunday morning.
It didn’t feel real to her at first, gaining that feeling of memories slowly hitting her and remembering all of the days that she spent overtime within this exact warehouse building to train until she felt as if she had done enough. All of those sleepless nights were spent trying to be perfect in other people’s eyes, even when they thought that she was perfect enough, and she didn’t ever want to give up at all—goes to show just how far this injury took out of her to have finally given up everything that she worked hard for to just rest and heal her wounds.
“I could imagine when something puts you down for a while, it’ll eat away at you until you realise you can’t continue anymore,” she knew immediately who that voice belonged to once she heard it right behind her and all that Chloe could do was to put on a smile and slowly turn around to face her mentor, Jason. “I’ve heard about how you’ve been getting on with your recovery and I’m impressed, you’re doing a lot better than I anticipated you to have been, but if it’s something that you would want to do – getting back inside of that ring again so soon – then, as your trainer, I’m not going to let you do that.”
Those words were like a knife right into the back for Chloe, to hear her own trainer even say something like that was gut-wrenching to listen to and to soak it in. Her dream was to become that great of a wrestler and now, she’s not even able to be taught how to do so.
“And I know that you might not like hearing those words coming out of my mouth but you have to understand something here, Chloe. I respect the fuck out of you, I really do, but I cannot risk more harm being done to you and your knees if I continue to make you work twice as hard or even at the same level as before.”
Chloe hesitated for a moment as she pondered how to even take in what Jason had just said, lowering her head and finding herself deep within her own thoughts to even try and come up with a simple reply for him, but she took a deep breath and slowly found her words once again.
“You know, it’s never easy to give up everything that you’ve grown pure ambitions for after all of these years, right? It’s difficult to just… stop what you’ve been doing and act like you can still do it, even if it means probably having it’s own limitations on what you can and cannot do.” Chloe sighed. “This isn’t how I planned out my future to have been dependant on, this whole stupid leg injury that might not even see me fully healed so soon, and that kind of pisses me off because most days? I just want to beat people up for fun and have that adrenaline rush through me, but how can I be so sure my knees won’t just fuckin’ blow out and fuck my shit up again?”
She began to shake her head, feeling disgusted with herself, and ending up seated on the ring apron, hanging her head low as her hands reached up and were brought to the back of her own head.
“It’ll be rough if you keep that mindset into your head for however long it keeps up with you,” Jason places himself onto the ring apron right beside Chloe, watching her lift her head up slowly and bringing her hands down from behind her head. “Though, I’d rather not see you eat yourself up over this sort of thing, because you have the talent within you and I know that when you do get the chance to be more confident in yourself to get back into this ring? You’ll kill it just like you have in the past, just gotta shake off that ring rust, that’s all. I’ll help you through this.”
Maybe he was right, maybe all that she needed was that confidence to get back into the ring. But there’s just something that’s resting in the back of her head that’s just not allowing her to see into the future, not allowing her to see her become successful again, and that’s become a problem for her ever since she found out about the condition of her legs. She doesn’t know exactly what it is, but it’s just sitting in the back of her mind, and she’s hating it. It feels like tears are building up within her eyes as this thought it just plaguing her own mind to see this fucked up vision and she feels like just running away could help her problems. How she’s caught herself in this endless void of mental torment, she has no clue whatsoever, but she knows she has to break free at some point.
She has to, for her own sake.
