TRAINING DAY

It's four in the morning and yet, Irina and Joshua sit inside of the barn, sparring for hours on end. Sweat pouring from both of them as they have finally settled down for a break. A long few sips from their water bottle and Irina is catching their breath, eyes closed as they lean back against the ropes behind them. They're seated on the ring apron, while Joshua takes care of a few work emails a few feet away at the table. "I told you that you'd end up back here again." His words are low, though he doesn't look away from the task at hand as Irina mimics him in annoyance. The walls around them are covered in photos of those who came before Irina and those who came before those people. Irina shifts from the ring apron, heading towards a certain set of pictures.
Pictures of various memories that Irina's sister, Anya, had with Joshua, who had been her husband. A hand reaches out, delicately brushing against a childhood photo of Irina and Anya, both smiling brightly, laughing, just having the chance to truly be a couple of kids. "Reminiscing again?" Joshua's voice stirs Irina from their thoughts, pulling them back to the here and now, where her sister no longer existed. Where her sister had been dead and gone for nearly three years now. It had been one of the reasons Irina had been forced to relocate, with Joshua leading the way. In spite of how much they bickered and argued, Joshua and Irina were family at the end of the day, and that meant more to Irina than she would ever let on.
"I miss her." There's a beat as Irina exhales softly, dropping their hand back to their side. Joshua grimaces, nose crinkling a bit as he takes a seat on a nearby bench. He pats the spot beside him, where Irina settles and curls up against his side like a child. For awhile, neither one says anything, they simply sit in silence. Appreciating their new lives they now led. Irina with the wrestling and having a new boyfriend. Joshua with being a wrestling trainer and... other odds and ends along the way. Irina still wished with her whole heart that things were different, that Joshua could get away from those other odds and ends. But, they knew at the end of the day that Joshua would never be free.
"Hey, I have to do stupid promo for stupid company. Can I use barn?" Irina shifts from their previous position, pulling out their cellphone as they stand to their feet. "Of course, 'Rina. I've got to go take care of some stuff anyway. Lock up when you're done?" Irina nods, waving goodbye as Joshua steps out of the barn and closes the doors behind him. Silence fills the air and Irina grabs her cellphone and props it up against a barrel before finding a good backdrop. Settled, the red record button flashes and it's lights, camera... action.
"America. Land of the free and home of the brave. But, just how brave is this place I now call home?" Irina turns, whereas their back had been facing the camera, instead they now face the camera with a small smirk. "For those who do not know me, I am Irina Sokolov. I have been wrestling in America since the day I arrived three years ago. Professional wrestling is no easy feat. In fact, it is one of the most hard fought professions around. We put bodies on line, not just our bodies, but bodies of others. Just to get the thrill, some of us enjoy the chase... Others become the hunted. But, not me." Irina takes a moment to collect her thoughts, settling onto the bench once more.
"You see, I came to America with nothing but clothes on back. I was uprooted from my home, the place I had known since the day I was born, and my life was changed due to circumstances out of my control. But, I always make most of any situation I am tossed into. So, this situation I find myself in? The quarter finals for chance at gold? Well, it is not a situation I cannot handle."
Irina dusts her hands off on her pants, lets out a gentle chuckle as she stretches short legs out ahead of her. "Leo Reza, an unfamiliar name and face. I know how hard it is to make a name for yourself in this business. This is my first time in an actual wrestling company, so I too have those same goals and ideas."
Irina pauses, just briefly. "But, I have lot more at stake in this than you do. I have fought too hard and too long to allow this opportunity to slip through cracks in my fingers." Irina stretches one hand out for emphasis. "I want this more than anything. Though, I will not discredit you, Leo. In fact, I want you to bring out the very best that you have. But, I just do not think it will be enough. I don't know you and you don't know me... But, I know what I am capable of."
"I will not allow you to get past me in this battle. It is simply not in the cards. I will do whatever it takes, without holding back on anything that I throw at you. But, can you say the same? Do you have the same fighting spirit? I guess time will only tell. I know that I will do whatever it takes, I know that I have the spirit and aggression. But, can anyone else hold those same values?"
Irina pauses, just briefly. "I want you to give it your all in this battle, Leo. But, make no mistake about it... It will not be enough to keep down the person with a spirit of a raging bear." Irina stands to her feet, reaching out for her cellphone. "Good luck, Leo." The scene fades to black a moment later.
