“BARREL FOR THE BELT”
RUSSIAN BATH HOUSE.
UNKNOWN CITY, UNKNOWN COUNTRY.
FRIDAY, APRIL 29th.
3:19 p.m.
Seated alone mostly submerged into a large, rectangular bath embedded into the floor of our setting is a muscular, yet taut woman with shoulder-length platinum blonde hair. Steam permeates the air, the moisture clinging to the exposed skin of none other than IBW WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPION ANA SOMNIA. Her arms are stretched out to either side, resting comfortably on the edge of the pool’s mouth. The water reaches up to just below the beginning of her shoulders, but even from our camera’s angle across the bath, it is clear she is unclad beneath the surface of the water. Her head is leaned back onto the concrete, her eyes softly shut. Slowly, our camera tracks in, our shot narrowing until it has crossed the façade of the water. It settles on Ana’s clavicle, her neck, and the underside of her jaw— until she lifts her head from its reclined position and squares it to our camera with a stern, yet sultry smirk.
“There is Russian proverb,” she says. “‘Волко́в боя́ться — в лес не ходи́ть’. This is something my parents would say when we were children. It means… if you fear wolf... do not enter forest. This is good advice.” Her head tilts slightly to the side. “This is warning IPW roster should heed. If you fear Devil Herself, do not enter ring. Same concept. Liz Karlson... is one of few athletes to step into ring with Undisputed without fear. I admit, I respect this. Every fight we have had has been bloodbath...” An unnervingly nostalgic grin spreads across her features. “You have literally signed contract in my blood... I have left your face broken, nose hanging to side… But in all of our battles, Elizabeth? We have never truly settled anything... not really.” She shakes her head for emphasis. “First, I took VICTORY Pro Women’s Championship from you. Then we failed to finish fight within time limit. And last time we shared ring? You pinned me. I admit this. But after all of this, we have one win each to our names. At Adrenaline, we will correct this mistake.” Ana sneers now, allowing her arms to slowly slide into the water. “Because I am going to win this tournament, сука. No matter who I have to put to sleep along way. It is pity you will be first. Because you see, Elizabeth…”
“You have my respect, da... but you do not have my mercy.”
“Because you are first,” continues Slavic steel. “I must make example of you. I must make… statement at your expense. I will paint my declaration of war upon canvas in your blood as you signed your name in mine nearly three years ago.” Ana pushes away from the wall against which she had been sitting, slowly walking along the floor of the bath to approach the camera, which pulls back at the same pace. “I will win IPW’s World Championship, сука. I will win because I must. I am only one equal to task of leading IPW into future of sport… because I am only one equal to task of leading sport into future. My respect for you between bells will not interfere.” One of her hands lifts out of the water and runs back through her hair. “You see, I am unclouded by conscience or delusion of morality. I am merely personification of loftier... ambition... ambition loftier than you or anyone else in Infinite Power tournament is capable of.” Finally, Ana stops advancing toward the camera, having traversed the entire length of the bath and running out of water to conceal herself beneath. “I respect that you do not fear me, Elizabeth. I do. But I also pity you for this. Because what my parents used to say remains true… If you fear wolf, you do not enter forest… but I do not fear wolf. Wolf... fears me.”
“And you really should, too.”
“Because this time I will not leave nose hanging from side of face,” adds Ana. “This time I will finish fight before time runs out. There will be no draws to save you, Elizabeth. Nothing can save you. It is pity your death will be little more than collateral damage on my path to World Championship. I might even say you deserve better... but you will not have it.” Ana shrugs with a subtle snicker humming through her lips. “All you will have is your own blood to drown and suffocate on… your own broken teeth to feel cutting open your throat from inside out… and your life flashing before eyes as I choke it out of you, сука.” Ana pulls a hand up from under the water and curls it into a fist, palm pointed skyward to allow water to cascade down from within the fist. “Your successes in companies like OWA and APEX Wrestling mean nothing between bells, same as mine in companies like EHWF. All that matters between bells is what your body and mind can endure before breaking... And in my decade in this sport, I have yet to be broken. As for you, though, Elizabeth?” Narrowing her eyes, Ana curls her upper lip to bare her teeth like a Xenomorph might. “It will give me great satisfaction to be one to break you... And break you I will, because when you step into ring with Undisputed? When you step into MY ring?”
Ana’s eyebrow cocks skyward despite the rhetorical nature of the question. Smirking nefariously, Necessary Evil allows a sinister snicker to hum through her lips. Next, she shakes her head to emphatically deliver her final, guttural threat.
“NO ONE SURVIVES!”
This foreboding warning precedes Somnia flicking the pad of her thumb across the bottom of her top two front teeth, a Russian gesture used when making guarantees. Slowly, we fade to black as Somnia softly descends and disappears beneath the surface of the water.
“Death took hold of the scythe — a fierce culling began.”
